I'm not a model, so I certainly don't speak from experience, but I can say that these days women of all shapes and sizes have opportunities in the modeling world. It's really about what style you want to go for and being passionate in what you love. Present the best "you" to the world, be strong and own it! Just know that not every photographer/magazine/agency will be into your look... it's the way of the world for us girls bigger than a size 12! :) 

We might have some "plus-size" models here willing to sounds off with better experience-based stories.

As a general rule models should be thin. This is because designers want the clothes to hang like they are on a hanger. In Pin Up curves are celebrated, so there is some wiggle room with size. Alt modeling is, like you said, about 90% thin... but healthy thin, not waif thin. There are always exceptions, but they are the exception, not the rule. The harsh truth is that it is hard to get into modeling, and even harder if you are a bigger girl. Unless you focus on plus size modeling (which is mostly mainstream), you are most likely going to have a hard time  If you want to do it for fun, go for it! Nothing wrong with modeling as a hobby, and then you can look however you want. But if you plan on trying to make it your career, you have to go into it with the understanding that you might not be what people are looking for. 

No matter what, if it's what you want to do you should try. You never know what might come out of it. At the worst you have some great photos to show your grandkids, at the best, you become the top plus size Alt model in the world... either way, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Good luck.
