- What does the image of a crouching woman with a massive Mohawk,
sporting nothing but a sneer and a body-full of retina-staining
tattoos, have in common with a subdued black-and-white portrait of singer Waylon Jennings? On the surface, it would appear there could be no possible
connection, but delving far beneath what first meets the eye is
photographer Justice Howard's specialty, and it is she who is
responsible for those two, as well as half a million other iconic images
of a multitude of memorable personalities, both obscure and famous.
Her gift stems not only from her ability to make her subjects feel at
ease, but she is possessed of a transcendent gift that enables her to
effortlessly affix the essence of her subjects' human frailties, as
well as their triumphs, upon the film. Laying bare for the viewer much
more than mere flesh, Ms. Howard's works are evocative pieces of art
that appeal to everyone from the casual observer to the most refined
aesthete. Entire venues, from a posh Washington D.C. watering hole,
to 64 rooms in an upscale hotel in South Beach, have literally been designed from
the ground up, in shrine-like reverence for her imagery. Besides
magazine and book projects too numerous to list, she takes pride in having
been voted "Favorite" photographer, atop such masters as Helmut Newton
and Irving Penn, on the womeninblackandwhite.com website. What's next
for this irrepressible lenstress? Suffice it to say that Justice Howard, like any
other force of nature, will leave an indelible impression, no matter what direction.
